In the summer of 2001 I was in Denver with my sister and poor.  I decided to get a temp job to hold me over, but as my resume is packed with interesting stuff, I am over-qualified to get a job answering phones, which is precisely what I wanted.  Therefore I decided to ‘tweak’ my CV – Kate E. became Kitty and ‘Kitty’ was the PERFECT secretary.  My CV even included me singing in the church choir and volunteering with the girl scouts.  I was the ‘All American Gal’, perfect and unthreatening with no aspirations beyond being in that moment.  I was hired immediately.

I went to work for a Title Insurance Company in central Denver.  They loved me.  I did the job well (of course).  What I came to realize was although I was being less honest about my name and background, I was being more truthful to myself then anyone in the office environment.  No one really wanted to be there.  They all spoke of winning the lottery and the weekend and fairy tale weddings.

I began to play around with social distance, and expectation.  At all times I did the work, maybe sometimes I would sing a bit of Puccini at the photocopy machine, other times actually making EYE  CONTACT with the boss.  I was conscious of changing energetically the oppressive office environment.

After two weeks I returned to Philadelphia and created a performance piece ‘Only Kitty in Denver’ which premiered in my parent’s driveway….

Where am I?
