CONVERSATIONS WITH AN ALIEN

PART ONE: Running For Charity

As the world races to 2012 (the purported ‘Endtime/London Olympics’); Outerspace Alien, Maurice, from the Planet HooHooHooHaHaHaTeeHeeHee has blasted down to Earth to get some final viewpoints from its’ inhabitants.  Kate E. Deeming, resident Pollokshields, Glasgow, Scotland, UK, Earth is her first target.  Kate E. is in training for the Great Scottish Run (http://www.runglasgow.org/GSR-2010/) where she will run 10K to raise funds for the Charity Funforlife(www.funforlife.org.uk) .

Maurice floats beside Kate E. in her spaceship as she ‘trains’ for the final run.

Maurice: Earthling, what are you doing?

Kate E.: (gasp gasp gasp) I’m running.

M: (looking ahead) Where?

K: Just up to those grove of trees there.

M: (looking behind) Is something chasing you?

K: (huff huff huff) No no, it’s for Charity.

M: Charity?

K: (wheeze wheeze wheeze) An organization that helps people.

M: People don’t help people?

K: (heeeeehaaaww aaah) Well they DO, well some of the time.  Charitys are special, they focus on particular help.  My charity helps children to be happy.

M: (observing some school kids bounce up the road) Children are not happy?

K: (groan, groan, gaaaaasssp) Well these kids(wheeze) -the charity helps-have been through a war, or natural disaster, or they suffer the effects of poverty.

M:  War?

K: (whheeeezzzee…) Um well war is like where there are groups of people fighting each other and people get killed and it’s horrible but sometimes it gets to that point before you know it…

(Maurice looking confused)

K: (gasp gasp gasp)-Oh it is very complicated but the kids they suffer, and they need help to see beyond that tragedy.

M: And these children (pointing to school children walking home from school) they are the same?

K: (uuuuuuu, aaaa, gaaassp) Nooo, not these children, necessarily…..

M: And so you’re running.

K: (GASP) Yes.

M: Why?

K: (WHEEEEEEZEEE) People give me money to run.

M: Don’t they want to help the children?

K:(Gaaassp) Of course… (wheeze) but uh, well you see… (cough cough cough eeeeee UGH…oooh) but it’s just what people do…

M: Do you like to run?

K: (stopping) No.  Not really. It’s just what you have to do.

(Kate E. collapses on the sidewalk groaning in excruciating melodramatic pain ‘oooohhh oooooohhhh oooOOOOOOooooohhhOOOOhh..)

M:  So you’re running to that tree (even though you don’t like it) so people give you money that you give to the children which they might anyway but they don’t necessarily.

K: (looking up at Maurice) Exactly.

Maurice pauses for a moment looking about at the houses, the green trees, the children and the cars whizzing past.

M: Is there not enough to go around, according to my data the Earth is rich with resources.

K: (massaging tendons whilst whimpering in pain) Yes that’s true I suppose, its just some people get more than others.

There is a pause Alien and Human study one another.

K: It’s complex.

M: This place you live is very strange.

K: Indeed it is Maurice, indeed it is…

I am participating in the Great Scottish Run on the 5th September 2010 not for FUN but to raise money for Funforlife (www.funforlife.org.uk).

Changes…

August 26th, 2010 § 0

Hello and peace to all
I hope this e-missive finds you and yours healthy and happy.

Autumn is fast upon us and with that a reminder that all things have a lifespan, with natural beginnings and necessary endings.  I think on this as I to prepare to transition into another phase of my development.

As you know, for the past 20 months I have volunteered for the charity Funforlife.  It has been a wonderful experience.  I have made wonderful friends and partnered with extraordinary artists; my worldview has expanded via my time in Sri Lanka both during and after the war as I sought to understand it; the Sri Lankan cuisine has now been added to my list of favourites, I have challenged myself physically in my learning of traditional Sri Lankan dances, and I have made art in response to my experience.  All of these things have been balanced with a desire to bring peace and connection to the world via these experiences in supporting the aims of Funforlife, which are very simpatico with my own.

I am very proud and pleased to have had the time and opportunity for all of this.

But as in all aspects of life there come necessary end points.  As this pursuit has been voluntary (and in many cases self-funded), the long-term sustainability (for myself) is precarious at best.  I am now in a position where I need to focus on my own personal security as I have accrued much personal financial debt that I need to attend to.

To that end I am pulling back from charitable activities for the next six months whilst I create stability for myself.  This will allow me to achieve even more when I do engage once more on the charity circuit which I am still wholly committed to.

As a final hoo-ha I am running the Great Scottish Run 10K on 5 September in aid of Funforlife’s wonderful activities.  I invite you support me this one last time.

Thank you again for all your wonderful wishes and support!

With much love and peace,
Kate E. xx

ps-I am still considering the possibilities for Dance Peace 24/7 and will keep you posted on the developments.

Flying

August 20th, 2010 § 2

Part One: Arrival

I emerge.

Cathedral ceilings call attention to the beyond
Still
a stagnant nervousness

Time willed to go quicker

We pull our bodies into death
Only the soul remains
Seated in perfect preparation for the next place.
Or move in the invisible molasses jungle designed to contain us.

We are stimulated
in kind
by items designed for further removal from earthly experience

Gadgets and gizmos
Whozits and whatzits
All the now
The All we need
Advertisments flash hard bodied goddesses with their Prada bags preparing them for enlightenment.

And so we are not moved.

Noises of escape
“Flight 467 to Dubai now departing from Gate 23…Flight 62 to Chicago now departing from Gate 83…."
Bodies hustle like mice down the tunnels, following as instructed.

Heaving security cloaks the whole endeavour
Watching and channelling every action and reaction
in perfect time.

Part 2 - Departure
My body is not ready for this death
Containment for the eternity of another’s convenience.

I am designed for flight.
And as such

I will fly

Here
In this space
I will not cave to the unnatural protestations of my predecessors

And yet I wish not to create a revolution in these structures but to allow the revolutions to continue
in my frame.

The earth’s gravity pivoting within my anatomy
And me in the grace of her chaos
Will move

So I find a space away from the masses,
under a stairwell,
light fuses in every direction

Placing my carry-on down

Feeling the emergence of my soul once again I sway
And extend as my limbs
stretch in remembrance
I am releasing from my cocoon in my slowness

Shortly I am joined in my dance

A cleaner
enters
polishing the glass alongside me in round motions
Young German boys (amused by the discovery)
March in lines back and forth
Whilst recording on phones
With laughter

A security guard
passes with clipboard (several times over)
head bowing in hidden acknowledgement

As the movement is constant.
We all become part of this dance
Waking waking waking

Flying.

Just a blink of life's moment

And I hear
“BA Flight 067 to Philadelphia will be departing from Gate 21”….
so it continues...

On My Dancing-Bellahouston Park, Glasgow 12 August 2010 1630hours

August 13th, 2010 § 3

Today my heart was green.
It rose from the earth breathing
deep intake of harmony in all things

Things

Of here and not here
Of now and not now

It was an embrace

small woman Tall Trees
Waving

My groove followed the rotation of the Planet pulsing in hip

They liked it those Trees,
not so much me-
Or Them
but US.

One universal thread of Being
From the beginning there was the breath you see
And We all had it for our Life

So We breathe together those Trees and I
We move naturally in Our own responses
My face extends from ear to ear spinning
A wash of green dancing above
Happy
Content
In Love
In the Love
The Big Love
No man-woman; mother-child
But That Love
The manna of Life

Not a soul –millions of souls-here.

I remember this as I swim in its memory and all is ok.

The reverie only matched in the final movement by one man
He hobbles up to the great temple on walking sticks.
Smiles in recognition of my prayer

And I think to Myself, He is already dancing.

CO-PRODUCER OPPORTUNITY DANCE PEACE 24/7

I am producing a worldwide dance event Dance Peace 24/7 on the 4/5 December 2010.  I am seeking a co-producer to facilitate this event.  The individual will partner me in the management, fundraising and marketing of this extraordinary happening that is already gaining worldwide attention.  In Glasgow I am involving the ‘four corners’, that is getting anchor organizations from the North, South, East, West as key partners in the event.

If interested please email deemingdreaming@yahoo.co.uk.  I’d like to know why you want to be involved and what you bring to the (global peace-making-dancing) table!  Thanks.

CO-PRODUCER OPPORTUNITY SIGNATURES SCOTLAND/SRI LANKA

I am continuing on the bridge performance work initiated in 2010 between the young people in the Northeast of Sri Lanka with the Glasgow Community in a project titled “Signatures”.

The piece will initiate in the autumn of 2010 involving the Girl Guides, local Sri Lankan folks, and linking to the orphanages I have been working with (via Funforlife) in Trincomalee (and Jaffna 2011).  The premise involves letter writing and finding/sharing your own ‘signature’ which will be explored in movement and film.  The outcomes will be performances in Sri Lanka in January/February 2011 and for Glasgow Refugee Week in June 2011.

I am seeking a co-producer who will help to manage the project, including grant writing and marketing.   There are many funds available to support this fantastic project and make it something truly remarkable.

If interested please email me deemingdreaming@yahoo.co.uk.  Please let me know why this project interests you and what skills will help it to attain it’s true brilliance!

GREAT SCOTTISH RUN

Today marks one month till I put myself in the race again for Funforlife (5 September 2010)!  Please consider donating (or running!) in aid of this fantastic charity whose work using arts to heal and empower young people worldwide is visionary.  In the next year their projects expand into Haiti whilst continuing in Sri Lanka, India, Bosnia and the UK.  Every penny makes a difference.  Thanks much!  If you’d like to be part of my TEAM email me!

Dancing Still

August 5th, 2010 § 0

You ask me how is my dancing?

My dancing.

It is the most extraordinary thing.  I have found a cell for my movement it is but a micrometre of my former home. I dance here unobserved and constant.

If life is about balance then the wildness of winter, rivers and business must be matched by my current embrace of summer, earth and surrender.

This new containment bubbles chortles gurgles to nurture my organism.  Breezing from tip to tail protected from the raining constant outside.  This professed force of nature reclaims herself in silence.

No one knows the expanse with which I extend my limb; flutter within – it is a solo act of millions of parts.  I swim solitary in its mystery.

Outside mowers, growers, officers.

My dance.

The latitude of my chamber with its diameter of rhythm expanding in every direction serves a motor.  For now, the entrance closed.  There is no lock however, no bars on the windows, sunlight and air are my companions and roads still beckon to the four corners.

Breathing. Expanding.  Such awesome feats are often thought not possible in such close quarters.  I fly.

Maybe you recognize this?  You should.

Still we mirror one another.

And that, my dear friend, is how I am dancing.

With much love and good wishes

Kate E. xx
