I’m pleased and proud to announce the online premiere of the Film ‘THREADS’ as completed/compiled and masterfully worked by the very talented filmmaker Peter Hastie.

Threads the film is derived from the film footage of my performance film installation ‘Threads’ which was presented in 2007 in conjunction with Che Camille in Glasgow. I created a live installation environment with knitter Sara Grieg. The dancers included Sara Potter, Yvonne McCombie, Camille Monson, Kelly Lovelady and myself. Actor Robbie Jack also participated. Filmers included David Peter Kerr, Eve McConnachie, and Clyde Jones.

I was interested in how, as a filmmaker, you could engage with the live and future moments simultaneously. Live, insomuch that it is created in real time. Future, in that film is projecting itself into a future moment. And past, when utilizing mythological themes and ritual.

In this way I wanted to explore the creation of something holistic and transformative. When Peter Hastie and I met in 2007 regarding the footage what I said was

“I wanted people who had been at the performance (on seeing the film) not to think – ‘that’s what I saw’ but rather ‘that’s what it felt like’“.

So I’m exceptionally pleased with the outcome, which also taps into feminist themes of women seeking their place as quoted in performance text (not in film) ‘Innana’s Lament’, a 5000 year old myth from Sumeria.

“I – tell me where is my house, I, the woman who circles the land – tell me where is my house, Tell me where is the city in which I may live, Tell me where is the house in which I may rest at ease. Oh, Enlil, I , who am your daughter – tell me where is my house, I, the hierodule who am your bridesmaid – tell me where is my house, I, the Queen of Heaven, who am dear to your heart – tell me where is my house, Tell me where is my house, my mute, silent house, My house in which a spouse no longer lives, in which I no longer greet a son, I, the Queen of Heaven, am one in whose house a spouse no longer lives, in whose house I no longer greet a son. The bird has its nesting place, but I – my young are dispersed, The fish lies in calm waters, but I – my resting place exists not, The dog kneels at the threshold, but I – I have no threshold, The ox has its stall, but I – I have no stall, The cow has a place to lie down, but I – I have no place to lie down, The ewe has a fold, but I – I have no fold, The beasts have a place to sleep, but I – I have no place to sleep.”

Dawn White is 40 years old. 4 years ago she was diagnosed as having motor neurone disease. Over the first 3 years it progressed very slowly, but in this last year it has rapidly taken over her body. It means the only movement she has is in her right fingers and her head but even that is limited, and she is now beginning to lose her voice. Dawn needs to raise money for life-saving treatment to give her hope and let her know she isn’t alone in her fight against this terrible disease.

Although the event is sold out donations are still be taken here: http://www.friendsofdawn.co.uk/donations.html

Also you could put yourself on the stem cell/bone marrow donor register! So easy and yet YOU could save someone’s life! http://www.anthonynolan.org/

A typical evening lasts 2-3 hours, on a Monday night, in a convivial atmosphere- tables and chairs, drinks and conversation. It is be a place to network, to be inspired, and to relax.Guests have included artists and performers from across wide spectrum of disciplines….music from Michael Nyman and Ed Harcourt and Sarah Jane Morris, poetry from Kate Tempest and Jeremy Reed, interviews with novelists Rupert Thomson, Stella Duffy and ex-Spandau Ballet founder, the actor/musician Gary Kemp. Artists such as Richard Wilson, Liliane Lijn, Gavin Turk and Anne Bean have created special performances, and filmmakers Rudi Buitendach and Sam Fisher have delighted with short films.

Last week my friend’s outdoor shed got broken into at 430 am. There was nothing of value in it, some sticks for kindling for her fireplace, an old disused manual lawnmower. The night visitor must have been very disappointed indeed. I thought to myself, what if something else, something totally unexpected would have been there… waiting.

Like Martin Luther King sitting on a stool, or Mother Teresa, or…. his Mother?

But it was empty, which is perhaps a more telling metaphor. And yet it begs the question- at what stage does the activity of going into someone’s back garden uninvited in the night with a hatchet and crowbar become acceptable?

We might suppose the individual is poor and desperate – and this is probably true. They thought there must be something of ‘value’ in the locked cupboard that they could sell. Most probably this violation is just another step down the path he started on long before…

I’ve never heard of a dancer committing a crime – of any nature. I can imagine if you were to troll through crime statistics you’d be very unlikely to find any dancers at all.

And yet we are one of the poorest paid of the professions (probably not far off from poets). In the arts world we have the least amount of financial subsidy and yet, ironically, require a tremendous amount of resource. Somehow we manage.

But we don’t commit crimes. As a matter of fact we often seek to prevent them via work done in communities.

Chris McNulty was interviewing me for a follow up piece to ‘Pictures from the Broomielaw’ the other day. He asked if I had one story, one experience from my nearly 500 days of dance that stood out from all the others. And as my head raced through the 100s of encounters and days, weather patterns, and dances I could not choose one. I said, ‘No, not one, they’re like my family. I can’t possibly pick one, they’re all important to me’.

Perhaps therein lies a truth. I haven’t considered crime as a way ‘out of my situation’ because I’m so invested within a community of individuals and consequently are they, in me. This translates into a deeper commitment to my vocation of being an artist. I will do and sacrifice everything for a greater good, but funny enough I am consistently supported when I make that choice. And I don’t want… for anything. And I am happy… for the most part.

For I have meaning in my life, and I can only assume for that boy, it was not the same.

And hence, the shed was empty.

Mayhaps it’s time for us all to fill our sheds with things of genuine value.

Much love, Kate E. xxxx

Quite a significant day really!

So I’ve been working on my tax return for the 2010 year that begins the 6 April 2010. It marks quite an important year, as that was when I initiated my Broomielaw dances, and my life took on a whole new meaning. Not just for me, but for countless others as well, hence me writing a book on it ‘Hope Dances’. In spite of great personal challenges, matched by stresses across the globe, I managed to create something truly miraculous from nothing.

It is worthy of remembering.

And yet from reviewing my tax information, I only made £3377.30 in that year (three thousand three hundred and seventy-seven pounds and thirty pence!?!). I would have done better signing on. To be sure, I expected to make more (in the range of £12,000 which is still not putting me in the category with Donald Trump) but bad luck, communication, circumstance did not allow that to happen. This paltry amount of income wins me no status, no prizes in the current view of the Western world.

And yet I still created.

For me, as an artist, it’s tied into the idea of service. How do I serve the world with my gifts? I can imagine that I’ve got a pile of treasures inside of me but unless I present them into the world – like on a golden platter, they rot.

Too often we wait for permission to do things, and once we get the permission we wait for validation. But these permissions are very narrowly defined and often managed by fear. In the arts world, it’s whether we get funding or not, we get supported by one of the ‘approved’ agencies, or get critically reviewed by a very select group of individuals in periodicals of note. And whilst these things have value it’s only a very small part of the tapestry.

It’s like we’re standing at a street corner and waiting for the light to turn green. In the meantime there is no traffic for miles, it’s raining, snowing, hailing, there’s gunfire and you have to go to the toilet but you will not be moved across that junction until the light changes. It’s a simple activity crossing that road, but doing so would negate rules, that don’t always serve you. Or conversely, the light is green but you can quite clearly see a flesh-eating monster on the other side, and yet you cross.

These are the impracticalities, nay the idiocy I see of the systems that we develop, we get trapped in them and we lose a huge opportunity to serve the world and be our best selves, and to be happy.

But to do that we need to open our eyes and see when it’s time to cross the road, and to do so with open arms and heart ready for what may come.

So Happy Anniversary to me, my Mom & Dad, and Scotland!

With that I leave you with the very beautiful documentary film by Benoit Moulanier, ‘Scotland Dances’. Please share with all your networks. Quite tragically Glasgow City Council has decided to build pubs on top of my former dancing space, despite community opposition that will be a tremendous loss to the local community.

Also by Doctor Flaxman the following story

‘Kate’

I first met Kate when she was in her thirties.

She had red lips, black hair, brown eyes, pale skin and she moved differently from almost anyone I’d ever seen or anyone I’d ever met.

She’d spent the last 10 years building a joy machine inside her belly.

The machine was made entirely from moving mechanical parts – Kate didn’t have time for steady state electronic components, nothing fancy, nothing electric – metal only was the rule.

The machine was fuelled by dreams, conversations, memory, friendship, movement, love, experience and time.

Sometimes others helped build the machine.

It was jam packed full of springs, sills, rivetted iron panels, closed cycle loops, valves, clocks, tin cladding, filters, feedback gauges, pistons, cast iron levers, gears, baffles, stabilisers and very thin sheet metal.

It’s inputs were many and varied.

It had only single outputs, know as ‘joy pellets’.

The joy machine manufactured 100′s of these joy pellets in a 24 hour period.

The pellets were fired often, they moved very quickly and were rarely visible to the naked eye.

However, on those rare occasions when they were seen, due to some trick of the light or captured by high speed photography, the pellets glowed with a deep orange hue and like petrol on water, they reflected brightly the colours of the rainbow on their outer shell.

Kate would ‘zap – zap and zapzap’ people with these pellets.

The pellets had a 97% success rate and rarely missed.

The pellets would ‘zap’ from her eyes or ‘zap’ from her pointing index fingers – known to Kate as her joy guns.

The pellets would ‘infect’ dogs, small children, teenagers, mice, men, women, birds, small babies and the blind, no one was immune.

A joy pellet could hit you at anytime.

Being a ‘Philly gal’ , Kate also had a ‘don’t fuck with me’ machine.

For the most part and for good reason, Kate tended to work on this machine on her own.

In the Northern Hemisphere we are marked with an array of festivals about light this month. We deck our trees, light our menorahs, set off fireworks, and tend to the hearth all as a way of lighting the physical darkness.

Although the Solstice, arriving tomorrow, might herald the return of the sun on an external level

what is needed is for us to maintain and tend to our own light within.

I think about this as I sit in my empty flat. Emptiness gives time for much reflection, turning in, cosying down, and resting. All these things I’ve done in abundance this past week – feeling frozen like the earth, and finally submitting to the stillness of myself.

I sat with my fears, my longing and finally… my wish.

In this time of darkness, our own light is the only thing we can count on. And it can be the most difficult to maintain and yet we must for otherwise life, true life, ends.

As the solstice comes and goes, Christmas makes merry and 2011 bids her goodbyes I wish you and yours all that you wish in your deepest self, for your light to shine.

I thank you for your friendship, your kinship, for standing by me, for giving me a shoulder to lean on, for a smile shared, a meal, a sofa, an email, a thought, for work, for collaboration, for gifts,… I thank you for you.

Hello lovely people

Kate E. Deeming here with the leaving story that never ends… after the distress of my buyer backing out I have signed with the estate agent Slater Hogg and Howison who presented the best package to me in terms of value and professionalism, I have great hopes…

The property will go live tomorrow and fingers crossed it will sell soon. People are wont to remind me how bad the economy is and how challenging it is to sell a flat in the Christmas season, yeah pretty aware of that one, thanks. Must remind myself of that as I sell the rest of my furniture to pay my bills, curl up on my air mattress in my empty flat and subsist on my 54p of Lidl porridge….

That said, it’s amazing how quickly one adapts to new circumstance. When I was travelling around India on my dancing adventure with my (now ex) boyfriend, he insisted on finding the cheapest accommodation possible. This more than not comprised of a cement room with a bucket to bathe in, wherein I was the only female resident not paid to be there. And yet I got on with it. At the time I was in love, and it was what we had to do, and (to be honest) wasn’t a big deal.

And yet it is amazing how quickly we can talk ourselves into believing there are “things” we absolutely need. Really all that we need is food, shelter, air and love. That’s it. And the circumstances and context of these things can change. Many in the world don’t have the vast majority of these aspects for living is a shocking fact. That people feel entitled to more when some have none, is morally ambiguous to say the least.

I don’t mind surviving on less than before, my struggle is the waiting. Patience is the quality I must cultivate.

In this December month I am faced with a flurry of Christmas. I don’t like to count myself a scrooge, but there is a distinct tone of ‘bah humbug’ as I attempt to back away from the over-indulgence to the ‘temple of things’. Maybe it’s that I just spent the past six months offloading everything I own or maybe I am just too wise to what is needed, in myself, in the world and the madness, the true madness of this season wherein people create a mania of ‘stuff’, give presents when they should give presence, distresses me.

I am now in Perth, tomorrow I lead a workshop ‘Being a Holistic Leader – Body Wisdom’ for the Scottish Institute of Business Leaders (http://www.sibl.org.uk/) – I have made the decision to put aside powerpoint, paper hand outs and focus entirely on the human experience and gift of being with the people present, for us to come into the space of our bodies and being with one another. How is it we can be effective human beings, in the whole human experience if we don’t take time for one another and for ourselves?

The American Medical Association just came out with a study saying more people are ill than ever before because of our inactivity(http://www.drweilblog.com/home/2011/11/30/sitting-and-cancer-risk.html). We are bodies in this world, that are designed to move, to feel, to experience, and yet we amputate a large section knowingly via inaction. This creates disease. This is madness.

Dance more, laugh more, hug more, breathe more… all these aspects are essential for life.

Quite a busy week for me in addition to the SIBL event I am also guest lecturing at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen as part of their “Guests @ Gray’s” Series (http://guestsatgrays.wordpress.com/)

And Over the weekend I will be making some impromptu dancing throughout Aberdeen centre, in association with the band Flaxman (http://doctorflaxman.com/). Over the summer they recorded me dancing at the Broomielaw as part of their music video:

They’re quite a groovy group, full of stories to tell in many ways… I feel quite fortunate to have had the opportunity to collaborate with them. If you’re in Aberdeen keep an eye out, come and have a boogie!

As for me, sans glasses, mirror, bed, my boots so full of holes I might as well be barefoot, I am keeping on… dammit!

Best wishes, peace and love

Kate E. xx

Exhibition “Photos from the Broomielaw” by Chris McNulty and Julie Ann Barnes is still on at Cafe Hula 321 Hope St. till the 27th of December. Check it out!

www.papercamera.co.uk

We were very pleased to raise nearly £300 for The Starr Trust at my Open Mic Event, you can still donate to help children smile!
